The final model of the glove has different light patters to express the magnitude of the impact of the punch. This new visible expression of punches adds a new dimension to boxing events for both the athletes and the fans. If the project were to be taken further, the microcontroller and battery pack would be downsized and moved for a safer and more durable glove.
In the initial prototype, the electronics and power were fitted to the outside of the glove. The goal was to ensure that the code and hardware was operational. Small changes would be made to the code and placement of the hardware before creating the final model.
A sensor is hidden in the knuckles of the glove to track impacts, with the microcontroller and battery stored down by the wrist for safety reasons. LED lights are embedded in the padding to allow for maximum durability and visibility.
Concept and Ideations
The design goal of this product was to enhance an emotion being expressed. One of the most effective ways of projecting emotion is light and color. With this being the case, these concepts were designed around the usage of LED strips and sensors that track the motion of hands. Hands were the chosen subject as they are commonly used when a person is expressing emotion
